Microreactors to produce explosive materials

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? The larger the reaction vessel, the quicker products can be made -- or so you might think. Microreactors show just how wrong that assumption is: in fact, they can be used to produce explosive materials -- nitroglycerine, for instance -- around ten times faster than in conventional vessels, and much more safely as well.

If the task is to tunnel through a mountain, workers turn to explosives: the 15-kilometer-long Gotthard Tunnel, for instance, was created by blasting through the rock with explosive gelatin made largely out of the nitroglycerine -- better-known as dynamite. Producing these explosives calls for extreme caution. After all, no one wants a demonstration of explosive force in the lab. Because the production process generates heat, it must proceed slowly: drop for drop, the reagents are added to the agitating vessel that holds the initial substance. A mixture that heats up too suddenly can cause an explosion. The heat generated cannot be permitted to exceed the heat dissipated.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT in Pfinztal have developed a method for safer production of nitroglycerine: a microreactor process, tailored to this specific reaction. What makes the process safer are the tiny quantities involved. If the quantities are smaller, less heat is generated. And because the surface is very expansive compared to the volume involved, the system is very easy to cool. Another benefit: the tiny reactor produces the explosive material considerably faster than in agitating vessels. Unlike a large agitating vessel filled before the slow reaction proceeds, the microreactor works continuously: the base materials flow through tiny channels into the reaction chamber in "assembly-line fashion." There, they react with one another for several seconds before flowing through other channels into a second microreactor for processing -- meaning purification. This is because the interim product still contains impurities that need to be removed for safety reasons.

Purification in the microreactor functions perfectly: the product produced meets pharmaceutical specifications and in a modified form can even be used in nitro capsules for patients with heart disease. "This marks the first use of microreactors in a process not only for synthesis of a material but also for its subsequent processing," observes Dr. Stefan L?bbecke, deputy division director at ICT. The microreactor process is already successfully in use in industry.

When developing a microreactor, researchers match the reactors to the reaction desired: how large may the channels be to ensure that the heat generated can be dissipated effectively? Where do researchers need to build impediments into the channels to ensure that the fluids are well blended and the reaction proceeds as planned? Another important parameter is the speed with which the liquids flow through the channels: on the one hand, they need enough time to react with one another, while on the other the reaction should come to an end as soon as the product is formed. Otherwise, the result might be too many unwanted by-products.

While microreactors suggest themselves for explosive materials, this is not the only conceivable application: researchers at ICT build reactors for every chemical reaction conceivable -- and each is tailored to the particular reaction involved. Just one of numerous other examples is a microreactor that produces polymers for OLEDs. OLEDs are organic light-emitting diodes that are particularly common in displays and monitors. The polymers of which the OLEDs are made light up in colors. Still, when they are produced -- synthesized -- imperfections easily arise that rob the polymers of some of their luminosity. "Through precise process management, we are able to minimize the number of these imperfections," L?bbecke points out. To accomplish this, researchers first analyzed the reaction in minute detail: When do the polymers form? When do the imperfections arise? How fast does the process need to be? "As it turns out, many of the reaction protocol that people are familiar with from batch processes are unnecessary. Often, the base materials don't need to boil for hours at a time; in many cases all it takes is a few seconds," the researcher has found. Long periods spent boiling can cause the products to decompose or generate unwanted byproducts.

To develop and perfect a microreactor for a new reaction, the researchers study the ongoing reaction in real time -- peering into the reactor itself, so to speak. Various analytical procedures are helpful in this regard: some, such as spectroscopic techniques, reveal which kinds of products are created in the reactor -- and thus how researchers can systematically increase yields of the desired product, possibly even preventing by products from forming in the first place. Other analytical methods, such as calorimetry, provide scientists with information about the heat released over the course of a reaction. This measurement method tells them how quickly and completely the reaction is proceeding. It also provides an indication of how the process conditions need to be selected to ensure that the reaction proceeds safely. Researchers will be presenting a variety of microreactors, microreactor processes and process-analytical techniques at the ACHEMA trade fair from June 18-22 in Frankfurt.

Man boards United flight without ticket

A man released from jail on Memorial Day wound up boarding a plane without a ticket on Tuesday, San Diego Harbor Police said.

United Airlines flight 6323 was bound for Los Angeles from San Diego International Airport when flight attendants counted an extra passenger aboard the plane.

Authorities later learned the man entered the tarmac through an emergency door in the airport's commuter terminal. Although the alarm sounded, the man quickly made his way through the tarmac and boarded the plane with the other passengers.

A witness said he handed his duffel bag to a flight attendant, saying he urgently needed to use the bathroom. He then sat down in a passenger's seat.

The flight attendant realized there were too many people on the plane and identified the extra passenger. He was easy to spot, as he looked disheveled and suspicious, according to Nicholas Blasgen, a passenger on the plane.

Passengers were told to get off the plane while dogs sniffed their bags. They all were forced to go through security a second time before taking off.

"How could this happen?" Blasgen asked, "In this day and age when I have to take my shoes off to get on a plane, this guy bypasses everything. What if he had a bomb?"

The man was escorted off the plane peacefully. He was arrested and is now in jail. Harbor police are investigating the incident.

Elections 2012: Despite Costly GOP Efforts, Incumbent Defeats Still Relatively Rare

WASHINGTON -- Anti-incumbent fever is scarcely in evidence in the 2012 congressional primaries, despite costly efforts by conservatives to remake the Republican Party and this week's defeat of a Texas Democrat ousted after eight terms in office.

Rep. Silvestre Reyes' loss Tuesday night in an El Paso-centered district made him the seventh lawmaker of either party to fall in a primary for re-election this year. Three of the defeats were inevitable ? cases of one incumbent running against another after congressional boundaries were shifted to conform with 2010 Census results.

In the most notable defeat of an incumbent, Republican Sen. Richard Lugar lost to tea party-backed challenger Richard Mourdock in Indiana, although the impact of the upset on the fall campaign remains uncertain.

But hundreds of incumbents have won in the 32 states that have held primaries to date, most of them with ease.

With relatively few forced retirements at the polls so far, officials in outside groups cite other evidence of electoral success.

They cheered when tea party-backed Ted Cruz qualified for a runoff against heavily favored Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in a Senate Republican campaign in Texas, claimed credit for holding veteran Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., to a narrow win ? even though he gained nearly 60 percent of the vote in a multi-candidate race ? and cited the decision of longtime Rep. Dan Burton, R-Ind., to retire as evidence of their impact.

"Congress has a disapproval rating of close to 90 percent in poll after poll. There's an anti-incumbent statement right there," said Curtis Ellis of the Campaign for Primary Accountability, an organization that has been involved in races against about 10 incumbents of both party.

Ellis said his organization seeks to act as an equalizer against the built-in fundraising and other advantages held by incumbents. It spent $240,000 to help Reyes' challenger, Beto O'Rourke, but a $165,000 investment elsewhere in Texas failed to dislodge Republican Rep. Ralph Hall. Nor could it engineer the defeat of Reps. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill., or Jo Bonner, R-Ala.

"It's so hard to find a challenger" in many cases, Ellis said. "It's very difficult to raise the money to do the job right. We beat the bushes looking for real races," he said. "We're not going to spend money for somebody who wears a tin-foil hat, lives in the basement of his mother's house and spends 20 bucks" to challenge a committee chairman.

Some conservatives argue that the public anger that roiled the campaign of 2010 remains a force but has taken on a different form.

"Instead of doing tea party events and protests they are donating money and they are volunteering," said Matt Hoskins of the Senate Conservatives Fund, founded by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C. "The difference is they are doing less talking this cycle and they're doing more work."

The Club for Growth and the Senate Conservatives' Fund both backed Cruz in the contested Republican Senate primary in Texas, and served notice they plan to help him against Dewhurst in the July run-off.

"Texas Republicans are just beginning to learn the truth about Dewhurst's support for tax increases and government health care, and they are starting to conclude that he's wrong for Texas," said Chris Chocola, president of the Club For Growth, which stresses economic conservatism. Its super PAC spent about $2.5 million to help Cruz, and another arm of the organization helped raise another $750,000 for his campaign account.

But Dewhurst has allies of his own for the run-off, including the Texas Conservatives Fund, which spent $2.3 million on his behalf in the primary. "Ted Cruz a conservative? No Way," says the group's website.

The impact of the primaries so far on the fall campaign is a matter of predictable dispute.

Regardless of the outcome of the primary, Democrats are unlikely to seriously compete for the Senate seat in Texas. They assert that the defeat of establishment candidates in GOP Senate primaries in Nebraska and Indiana will work to their advantage this fall, just as they say Republican divisions helped them win seats and hold control of the Senate in 2010 in Colorado, Nevada and Delaware.

"From Arizona and Missouri and Michigan and Wisconsin, every Republican Senate candidate is claiming the tea party mantle and appealing to the far right-wing fringe of their party, and largely ignoring the independent middle-class voters that are going to decide the election in November," said Matt Canter, spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

But Texas, Nebraska and Indiana are more reliably Republican states than Delaware, Colorado or Nevada, and Republicans dismiss the talk.

In 2010 "there were times when it was obvious that if one particular candidate were nominated that candidate could not win the general election," said Rob Jesmer, executive director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. "That's not the case this time."

Unlike two years ago, the committee's chairman, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, has not intervened in primaries where no incumbent was on the ballot, an attempt to avoid antagonizing Republicans who might end up winning the nomination.

Apart from Reyes, the only Democratic incumbents to lose primaries this year are Reps. Jason Altmire and Tim Holden of Pennsylvania and Dennis Kucinich of Ohio.

Kucinich lost to another incumbent, Rep. Marcy Kaptor, while Altmire was defeated by fellow Pennsylvania Rep. Mark Critz.

Not even Matt Cartwright, the lawyer who defeated Holden, cited anti-incumbent anger for his triumph. Assessing his victory on primary night, he said, "It's a combination of things, No. 1, the redistricting, and No. 2, my own core political beliefs are a much better fit for the new district."

Among House Republicans, Rep. Jean Schmidt of Ohio is the only incumbent defeated by an outsider. In Illinois, Rep. Dan Manzullo lost to fellow Rep. Adam Kinzinger.

Are you ready for the raunchiest, most inappropriate-yet-hilarious father/son comedy of the year? Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg are hoping so with Sandler's first-ever R-rated comedy, "That's My Boy."

MTV News premiered the film as part of our second annual Sneak Peek Week ahead of the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, and a slew of the film's stars were on hand to help present an exclusive clip to the lucky audience: Samberg, Vanilla Ice, Will Forte, Ciara, Milo Ventimiglia and Eva Amurri.

The film revolves around deadbeat dad Donny (Sandler), who got his teacher pregnant when he was just a teenager and raised his son Han Solo Berger (Samberg) as a single parent until Han turned 18. After a financial mishap, Donny reappears in Han's life on the eve of his wedding. As Donny tries desperately to reconnect with his son, who has changed his name to Todd, Donny must face the consequences of his terrible parenting.

The clip provides the background — or an explanation of sorts — for how teenage Donny ended up sleeping with his teacher. In a nutshell, the teacher started it. We see teenage Donny (Justin Weaver) sitting in what appears to be detention for writing an inappropriate note about his teacher (Amurri), who asks if he has a crush on her. Donny looks visibly uncomfortable with the question, particularly after she says, "So, you don't want me?" and takes her hair out of a ponytail and twirls it around her fingers.

"No!" says Donny. "Yeah? I don't know what I'm supposed to say right now!"

"Is that gum in your mouth, Donny?" she asks, putting her hand in front of Donny's mouth so he can spit the gum out, which naughty teacher puts into her mouth and begins to chew.

As is the case with many a Sandler comedy, the scene is both funny and gross at the same time.

Newton saved the UK economy ?10 million

Where's a scientific genius when you need one? A statistical analysis suggests that Isaac Newton saved the UK economy the equivalent of millions of pounds by implementing measures to standardise the country's gold coins.

Although Newton is famous for his theory of gravity, he also spent the last 30 years of his life running the UK's Royal Mint, where the country's coins are manufactured. Ari Belenkiy, a mathematician at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in Vancouver, Canada, has now compared coins produced before and after Newton's stint at the mint to study the effect of measures he introduced to prevent rich goldsmiths from exploiting a currency loophole.

The quality of coins produced by the Royal Mint is assessed each year at the Trial of the Pyx, a ceremony begun in the 13th century. As coins are minted, a few from each batch are placed in a small chest, or pyx, and later weighed to determine how far they stray from the required standard.

This was essential because if coins weighed more than their face value, canny goldsmiths would buy them from the Mint, melt them down, then sell them back to the Mint at a profit, a process known as culling. "Neither counterfeiting nor clipping was involved," says Belenkiy. "The culling was a vocation of the rich!"

Belenkiy modelled the weight of the coins as a normal distribution, or bell curve. He then used a combination of records from the trials, Newton's notes and mathematical reasoning to calculate the standard deviation of the distribution, revealing the effects of Newton's improvements. His analysis suggests Newton reduced the standard deviation from 1.3 grains ? roughly 85 milligrams ? to 0.75 grains, or 49 milligrams.

Unfortunately, no historical accounts detail exactly how he achieved this, but Belenkiy suggests Newton may have applied his recently derived "cooling law" to slow the coins' cooling and reduce variability. However he did it, Belenkiy calculates Newton's improvements saved ?41,510 during his time as Master of the Mint, which is roughly ?3 million today. Belenkiy suggests this is an underestimate, however, as the four Masters who followed Newton also applied his techniques, saving twice as much again, which means Newton may have saved the UK around ?10 million in today's money.

"Once females begin to show preference for being provisioned, the low-ranked males' investment in female provisioning over male-to-male competition pays off," Gavrilets said in a statement. "Once the process was under way, it led to a kind of self-domestication, resulting in a group-living species of provisioning males and faithful females."

Effect of family

When the modern family evolved, Gavrilets says, it gave rise to parenting partnerships and the division of labor, which is important because human children take so long to grow up. While these hominin males may be working their butts off for their ladies, the ladies may still stray, Gavrilets wrote in research detailed Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Females are not predicted to become completely faithful, but rather, the level of their faithfulness is expected to be controlled by a balance between selection for better genes (potentially supplied by top-ranked males) and better access for food and care (provided largely by low-ranked males)."

PCB exposure linked to increased abdominal fat

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? There is a correlation between high levels of the environmental toxin PCB and the distribution of body fat to the abdomen. This is shown in a new study published May 29 in the scientific journal Obesity. Abdominal fat is already known to increase the risk of diabetes and high blood pressure, among other conditions.

Fat inside the abdomen (visceral fat) is considerably more dangerous that fat near the surface of the body (subcutaneous fat). For instance, fat in the abdomen has previously been linked to the development of diabetes. Monica Lind, associate professor in environmental medicine at the Section for Occupational and Environmental Medicine, together with Lars Lind, professor of medicine, has analysed data from the so-called PIVUS study, which comprises more than 1,000 70-year-olds in Uppsala.

From the same material they have previously shown that PCB can predict the development of diabetes. In the present study, these researchers measured levels in the blood of 23 persistent organic environmental toxins in the more than 1,000 70-year-old women and men. In nearly 300 of them, with the aid of magnetic imaging, they also investigated the amount of fat in various parts of the abdomen. Previous studies have used only BMI as a measure of fatness. They found that having high levels of the highly chlorinated and very persistent compound PCB189 was related to a high proportion of fat in the abdomen.

"These findings may indicate that PCB189, which was also related to developing diabetes, may be of significance in how fat is stored in the body," says Monica Lind.

To understand the underlying mechanism, more research is needed in the form of controlled laboratory studies. According to Monica Lind, there are several possible causes. For example, it would be interesting to study whether there is a hormonal impact on fat metabolism, an inhibition of the breakdown of cortisol, or an inhibition of the creation of oestrogen.
