Alcohol increases rectal cancer risk, but less so if wine is drunk ...

25May

People who drink large amounts of alcohol run an increased risk of rectal, but not colon, cancer.
Researchers in Denmark have followed a group of over 29,000 men and women for almost 15 years now, looking at factors such as alcohol intake and cancer incidence. They found 411 cases of colon cancer and 202 of rectal cancer during this time.

They found men were more likely than women to be heavy drinkers, and that heavy drinkers were more likely to smoke and weigh more than non-drinkers. Alcohol intake had little impact on the risk of colon cancer. But those drinking 41 units or more a week had twice the risk of developing rectal cancer, compared to non-drinkers.

However, the type of alcohol drunk was significant. Those whose intake consisted mainly of beer and spirits had the highest risk of rectal cancer. Where wine made up a third or more of the intake, the risk was much reduced. It?s far from obvious why alcohol increases the risk of rectal cancer but not colon cancer. The partially protective value of wine may come from substances like resveratrol, found in grapes, which can block the growth of cancer cells.
