EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- With some heat finally heading our way, medical professionals are cautioning people about the dangers of leaving their kids and pets in parked cars for long periods of time.

Dr. Shef Massey, the Sacred Heart Emergency Director, says it is more common to happen on days when the temperature in the 70?s.

He says even though temperatures might only be in the 70's, heat in the car accumulates really quickly and can reach close to 100 degrees, which could cause death.

Experts say even though it doesn't happen very often in our community, nation-wide, doctors see quite a few cases where every summer where kids are accidentally left in cars.

?The person would go unconscious; they would go into heats stroke, because they're not able to offload that extra heat that usually results in seizures and eventually the patient would go into the Respiratory arrest and then Cardiac arrest," explained Massey.

A group called Kids and Cars launched a campaign called "Look Before You Lock", which gives parents tips on how to avoid accidentally leaving kids in hot cars.

Police say leaving pets in hot cars could also land you a fine or even charges. Dr. Massey says it might be okay if you leave the windows open, leave them water, and check up on them every 10-15 minutes.
